OHIO INTERSCHOLASTIC RACING LEAGUE
Fall 2013
331 Racing is stepping up to make school-based MTB racing a reality in NE Ohio with the eventual roll out of additional districts throughout Ohio. As part of the Manatoc Experience on Friday afternoon, August 30, 331 Racing will be launching the new Ohio Interscholastic Racing League. The Ohio Interscholastic Racing League is an interscholastic high school mountain bike race series that is coordinated by 331 Racing and sanctioned by USA Cycling. The 5-race series is open to ANY high school in Ohio.
High school mountain biking is one of the fastest growing interscholastic sports in the country. High school leagues have been successfully operating in California for a number of years and new leagues have sprung up in states such as Michigan, Texas, Colorado, Utah and Virginia. Competitive cycling has seen dramatic growth in the U.S. in recent years and we feel now is the time for high schools to join the momentum, form a club and be a part of a new league in Ohio. Our goal is to transition the league into a separate non-profit in the near future.
Ohio mountain biking is growing, energetic and straight up full of fun contagious enjoyable events. From IMBA chapter rides, Spoke Junkies get together' s to local bike shop rides our community, our sport and network of trails is on the rise. The Ohio Interscholastic Racing League needs your help to continue our grass roots growth by identifying potential school systems, coaches within the schools and student athletes. Please help us get the word out and encourage others to join the new league.

2013 OHIO RACE SCHEDULE
Host venues and dates announced. Ohio Power Series expands with new courses in Dayton and Strongsville.
Every year we challenge ourselves to raise the bar and create a route and mix of races more challenging than the last. That's the great thing about planning a race in Ohio, with the hard work of many organizations there is an increasing amount of trails from which we can choose. From rolling hills or rocky trails to fast, flat and flowing, Ohio mountain biking is growing. For 2013 we introduce a new layered concept, the "mini-series": the OPS mini-short track, OPS mini-XC and OPS mini-time trial series, lets call it a series within the series. More details to follow in the next couple of weeks. We are also happy to announce a new partnership with Five Rivers Metro parks and MVMBA as the OPS joins forces with the Midwest Outdoor Experience in Dayton. Join over 14,000 like minded outdoor enthusiast's October 4-5 for the 2 day festival which includes over 100 exhibitors including the bike village, action sport area, climbing wall, youth adventure zone, freestyle kayak, slack lining, beer garden and more.
New sport open class: this is a class with little restrictions, aimed at those who stand atop the sport podium but are unable to race the expert distance. Or expert women who don't have enough competitors at the start line. Or expert racers who took the jump due to mandatory move-up but find their training schedules don't align. All ages, all genders, one open class. Stay tuned for details.
For 2013 we were overwhelmed with 23 race requests and we somehow whittled down to the offering presented below. We are also working a special event to happen in the fall. And what's up with the mystery race...well, it was a late addition to the schedule, the date has been reserved and we are close to making an announcement. Many have requested a larger event weekend, with that said we introduce the Vulture's Knob weekend - Stage 1 short track, stage 2 cross country, stage 13 short track - stage 14 cross country and toss in some zany VK bonus races on those weekends such as the muddy paws dog race and woo town single speed classic and youth races...we hope the request has been satisfied.
We hope your as excited as we are to begin 2013. We can't thank you enough for your support, enthusiastic passion and ideas to improve the series every year. The OPS is as much about fun, shared experiences, community, fitness and making new friends as it is about competition and enjoying the great outdoors.

The 331 Season Speed Pass
Race all season for a discount | limited time offer
A very popular option last year, the season pass + speed pass returns for 2013. How can a little bit of everything feel so good yet continue to get better. Well during the months of January - March we will push the boundaries of financial discounts and incentives by slashing our race day fees in half. In addition each season pass will automatically receive a 331 Speed Pass which allows you to skip registration lines and proceed directly to the start line for each and every race. From April 1 - 15 the season pass price increases but is still priced at a discount over individual pre-reg prices.
Here's the how and why of it...while we want to see the sport of mountain biking grow, we're also on a mission to protect local trails and save Vulture's Knob from private development. It's a delicate balance of time, passion, commitment and love of trails and sport. We also want to simplify the race registration process for you as a participant as we grow, by allowing you to skip the day of race registration lines, proceeding directly to the start line for each and every race with your speed pass.* To accomplish these goals, we're offering you incentives to help us...you show us the love and we return in kind.
When you wheel into the start line we'll slap a smokin' hot course in front of you and entice you to go fast with outrageous events. It's that simple - we bring it....the rest is up to you!
* - Exception for the Mayhem Enduro, we need your smiling "team" at time of registration and the 2013 season pass does not include entry into the Mayhem, please purchase separately.

YOUTH INITIATIVE | PROGRESSION SESSIONS
NEXT SESSION - Wednesday August 22- Medina's Reagan Park
Join us every week starting in June for free weekly youth clinics where we'll work on a few skills, tricks and techniques and then head out on the trail to put the skills to use. The clinic is designed for ages 15 and under and will be broken down by age and/or skill level. Parents may drop off your son/daughter at the clinic and let the instructors teach or you may join in on the fun. Feel free to leave your child and go ride with the adults while the instructors teach your children the skills and rules of the trail. We found when we head out onto the trail, the kids actually listen a little better to the instructors when their parents are not present. We've seen fast improvements in all skills over the first 5 weeks of the program last year.
We work on safety, trail awareness, the power stroke, balance, track stands, wheelies, overcoming and riding obstacles and more.
Games - bike limbo contest | last person riding | slowest race competition| skills course
We break the trail ride into portions of the trail suitable for the technical skill level of the children. We start with level, easy single-track and slowly proceed to trails with different trail features as the individual skill levels progress.

New EXPERT divisions for 2012
- Junior 18 & under
- Senior 19-34
- Master 35-44
- Master 45+
We've been watching the sport and beginner classes swell over the last couple of years, yet it seems the expert class does not share in this progression. After the suggestions of a few racers we've decided to redistribute the age categories in the expert division. As the expert class grows we will continue to refine.
Wonder if it's time for you to move up to the next class? Of course this is a fun series, but it's competitive too, so in keeping the playing field fair and equal, here's the guidelines for moving up a class.
IT'S TIME FOR YOU TO MOVE UP A CLASS WHEN:
- You finished on the podium last year (top 3 series finishers move up)
- You finished 1st in 2 or more races in your class last year
- You've seen a marked improvement in your efforts of the off season, or need a challenge.
Remember, the only way for newcomers to have the same thrill you have, is if they are able to compete at a level that's appropriate for them. (in other words by you moving up, helps keep Beginner truly beginner and keeps Sport truly sport) We appreciate your help keeping it fun for everyone.

Reagan Park Time Trial | Stage #1
NEO Power Series | June 19
The start of Ohio's premier race series leads in with the race of truth...man vs machine vs trail vs time vs mother nature. Stage #1 for the NEO Power Series pits racers not only against one another but against the clock. This is a single track time trial...bring your fast wheels, powerful legs and a good set of lungs! We bring it...it's that simple - the rest is up to you!
the NEO POWER SERIES is here!
2 time trials + 2 endurance race + 2 xc races
power | wattage | skill | speed | courage | suffering | determination | glory | agony | perseverance | passion | energy | epic | adrenaline | ride | bike | live | love
How can a little bit of everything hurt so good yet continue to push the boundaries of your personal thresholds - balance! 2011 brings 6 races to the series divided by 3 XC disciplines providing you with 2 opportunities to tweak and refine each type of race to achieve your personal best. Welcome to the 4th annual and updated version 4.6 of the North Eastern Ohio Power Series. This is not your typical cross country race series. We've tried that before, many times, in fact. And no matter what we did, it left the same bland taste in our mouths. But rather than using a tanking economy as an excuse to bag the whole race series, we switched it up and focused instead on what sets us apart. We scoured magazines for inspiration, held deep conversations with the local racers and friends, we listened to emails and seasoned veterans. Before we knew it, we were overwhelmed with ideas and thoughts and we are doing our best to bring the tastiest morsels to fruition. The 2011 NEO Power series is here! Go at it...get it dialed, Win it. Here's how we do it: - We slap a smokin' hot course in front of you and entice you to go fast with outrageous prizes - Cash, Bike Frames from Jamis Bicycles, Swag from North Face, Oakley, Swiftwick and more. Recovery food provided by either Chipotle or Pizza Pan. Goodie bags filled with Monster Energy Drink and Hammer Nutrition, LUNA Bars, Revive, Emergen-C, Chamois Butter for all racers! Local bike shop sponsors going huge for the event prize tables.
We bring it...It's that simple - the rest is up to you!

Vulture's Knob XC Race + Woo Town SS Challenge Bonus Race + Group Therapy DH Session
Saturday - May 21
Remember the old adage from years ago, "until you live it, breath it, taste it... this my friend is Vulture's Knob." This line was coined by one of the VKnob founding fathers and is still going strong today. Was the wise ole Dr. Knob rambling about tasting the dirt or the competition, breathing the air or a new challenge, or chomping on some after race dinner dish or dishing out the days epic stories...well, it's all here and then some as your 2011 race entry gives you access to a single track battle that includes 1 giant Chipotle recovery Burrito as you cross the finish line and Monster Energy goodness to keep the vibe flowing late into the night. You gotta be here to Live it...and well...the XC Race is held on Saturday evening so there my friend is a chance to get all three -live it , feel it and taste it. The race is followed by a Bonfire, the DJ Madnote recovery party, primitive camping & good times. All racers will even receive a goodie bag at registration with Revive, Luna Bar, Emergen-C plus more... and the awards ceremony is like no-other...not to be missed. Our sponsors are going bigger and better each year including the 4th year at a chance to win a totally custom Groovy Cycleworks frame and fork, custom built to size with your design for paint and details.
Then to top it off...immediately following the Groovy Cycleworks cross country race we will embark on an epic journey known as the Woo Town SS Challenge. This is a fun filled, smile generating action packed, zany single speed short track mountain bike race. This event showcases the simplicity and purity of rock'n the single cog with twists and turns only the mighty Vulture's Knob will for sure throw your way... can you say pickled sombrero or Monster float?
*NEW* YOUTH DIVISION *NEW* | 4:00
A new division is being added to Vulture's Knob events for the 2011 season to bridge the gap between kids races and the full on cross country racing distances. 12-13 year olds. They will start approx 1 hour before the XC race and will be racing 1/3 a normal XC lap. See website for info.
On Sunday, May 22nd we'll be throwing down a "Group Therapy Session" on the new mini DH course starting at 10:30 sponsored by Monster Energy Drink. This is a free, non-timed gathering, let's call it a jam session if therapy doesn't work for you. Monster Beverages included.

Vintage bike show and bonus retro klunker race
Vulture's Knob "Groovy" Series Race #3
Presented by Chipotle
BIKE SHOW AND RETRO KLUNKER RACE - Immediately following the cross country race we will be holding - fun filled races featuring bikes of years past. Here's the details
This event takes us back to the origins of mountain biking, where poorly prepared gentlemen and ladies charge off down a big hill on bikes that just ain't up to the job. Leave the lycra, disc brakes, and suspension behind, just grab a clunker and bomb it.
The VKnob Klunker Champion will be crowned at the closing ceremony/party. All competitors (in these event(s)) have to donate something or anything to the communal prize stash for each race entered.
Klunkers Races
Race number 1 = a clunker race | One rule -- you can't ride a mountain bike or anything suitable for the purpose. So that leaves anything old or inappropriate: choppers, shoppers, stingrays, BMX postie bikes, 20", 24", 26", 700c etc. The route is offroad, technical, rocky, and includes trails and roads. We’ll start somewhere then head down the lane to the new upper bowl trail, then back on the lane to the finish on Mcafee road
Race number 2 = the modern era of pre- 1995’s mountain bike builds | anodized wonder bikes, Stumpjumpers, Zaskars, whatever, (no modern disk or v-brakes), same course as race number 2.
Race number 3 = a chopper race around the outhouse onto the lane and around back to start, a couple laps?
Best vintage apparel contest! (it’s a costume party!)
Bike show Categories
Choppers
Clunkers
Pre-1995?
?
However, remember this is VKnob... there may be some twists thrown down between laps and on the course.

A good thing just got better!
As you can see, we're constantly adopting new ideas and moving forward. Be sure to let us know how you like it. We're certainly willing to field suggestions as to how we can make things better. This year we're introducing several new ideas and features to our races as a result of direct input from rider suggestions.
Series Race Pass - the cost of everything seems to keep going up, except our home values. 331 is bucking this trend by introducing a rider suggested series race pass. (save $50.00)
Online registration - if the full series race pass is not for you, save $5.00 off race day registration by registering online. (save $25.00)
Kids Races - We are having kids races at all our Vulture's Knob races!
New Start orders We'll be calling the top finishers up front to the start of each race for preferred starting positions.
Why the push to online registration, it makes sense! So we can respect the hardworking folks that prepare and provide food for our races. So we can continue to start races on time by streamlining the registration process and data entry. To make life easier! It's simple, painless and easy! Save $$$
